Title:  Adapting for Publication: When Passion and Real Life Collide

Description: Julia Garstecki pictured herself a novelist and spent many years on a middle grade manuscript. Eventually she came to terms that being a wife, mother, and teacher was not conducive to her writing quest. Rather than give up, Julia found other ways to publish, learning valuable lessons from editors and mentors along the way. While she isn’t the novelist she aspired to be (yet), she has managed to publish more than 70 books and never miss a family event. Now she is able to work part-time as she has built her writing business. Her key to success? Adapting for publication.

Julia Garstecki is the author of more than 70 books for young readers. She graduated from Michigan State University and received her master’s degree at SUNY Fredonia. She taught reading and special education before launching her writing career. She now writes books with her students in mind, applying her past experiences to her writing. Her books have been published by Black Rabbit Books, ABDO, Capstone, and Quarto among others. Julia has a husband, 2 children, and a miniature poodle named Bella. When she isn’t writing or tending to family needs, she attempts to do yoga.
