This NEW Professional Study Hall Series is an on-going offering of monthly “virtual” sessions in which participants study, discover, apply, share, and grow!

Each month features a different high-interest topic in a 1.5 hour Zoom session. Prior to the event, participants complete independent study or “homework” which they will then share and discuss during the actual Zoom session.

All of the Professional Study Hall sessions are led by knowledgeable industry experts who will facilitate the session and also offer guidance, insights, and resources. Enrollment for each session is limited to 10 participants, yet repeat sessions will be offered based on interest. Please use the waitlist function when registering if you are closed out. Registration fees for waitlist participants will be charged when new events are scheduled.

We are pleased to announce our first Study Hall

and invite you to watch for details on future topics!

ANNOUNCING … OUR FIRST Professional Study Hall — NOVEMBER 2020!

Title: Composition for Illustrators

Date: November 29th, 2020 (Virtual Zoom Event)

Time: 3:00 – 4:30 pm

Professional Study Hall Leader: Jacob Souva

Level of Experience: Beginner – Advanced

Homework Time (Average):  2 – 4 Hours

What to Bring: Book Selection from Homework (below); Notes

Event Fee: $25.00

Event Description: Where do you start when you’re illustrating a spread for a picture book? What’s the big thing that the illustration needs to say to perfectly complement and enhance the text? How do you find balance to tell a clear and powerful story for young minds? And exactly how do you get better at the mysterious craft of composition?

In this first session of our Professional Study Hall we will be digging into a picture book of your choice as a way of learning the art of composition. There will be homework! It will be assigned prior to the zoom session where we’ll come together to share. Jacob Souva (our regions very own Illustration Coordinator) will lead the discussion and provide some hard earned pointers and tips throughout.

About the Facilitator: Jacob Souva is a picture book illustrator born and raised in Syracuse, NY. He earned his BFA in illustration from Syracuse University and worked as a graphic designer for over 10 years. He loves to make kids laugh and think with his illustration work. Jacob sketches constantly and finishes his work digitally, placing a lot of emphasis on simple shapes, color, and lots and lots of texture. He is represented by Astound illustration agency. Jacob has illustrated six books, the first of which Pedro’s Pan: A Gold Rush Story was listed as a best book of 2019 by NYPL (New York Public Library). Watch for Jacob’s NEW books that are scheduled for publication next year.

HOMEWORK Brief – (A detailed description of the homework will be forwarded to registrants).

Step 1: Find a picture book you admire from your collection, a bookstore, or a library.

Step 2: Find a spread from the book that you find compelling. Pick one spread or page to dive deeper into.

Step 3: Thumbnail it.

Step 4: Some Questions. Work through a series of 5 – 7 questions provided in the detailed instructions (sent to registrants) and take good notes! The more you put into this section, the more you’ll get out.

Step 5: Reflect and revisit.

Finale: Sit back and smile. You’re ready for our Zoom meeting!
